Santuary Stories: Mario, The Last Pig
Meet Mario! Mario was rescued from upstate New York in 2014, when a former pig farmer had a change of heart after repeatedly noticing the intellectual and emotional capabilities of the animals he was raising for slaughter.
The farmer retired from pig farming, and his transition away from farming was captured in the 2017 documentary, The Last Pig. This award-winning film chronicles his final year on the farm, capturing in intimate detail the farmer’s personal upheaval as he questions his beliefs and the value of life.
The farmer sent his last pigs to Catskill Animal Sanctuary, which included Mario and his friend Audrey.
Running for 22 years, Catskill Animal Sanctuary is a 150-acre refuge in New York’s Hudson Valley, for farmed animals rescued from cruelty, neglect and abandonment. Over the years, thousands have come to this place of profound peace. They continue to come — sometimes one needy soul, sometimes a flock of 100 or more at a time. And they work to ensure each and every rescued animal understands what love feels like.
Mario is now living his best life! He is an absolute lovebug, who adores belly rubs, back scratches, luxurious mud baths, and pumpkins! He is one of the kindest pigs we know, and we’re so grateful Mario got to keep his life, instead of ending up on someone’s plate.
Why are animal sanctuaries important?
