Santuary Stories: Doc

He’s one of their largest residents, but despite his size, Doc is passive and gentle.
He loves meeting new people, and his favorite thing is to receive scratches on the bump between his horns – he’ll walk up to you and put his head down for scratches, which can look intimidating, but he’s just saying hi! He also loves the vets at Catskill Animal Sanctuary, and likes to lick them!
“You are safe, you are loved, and you matter.”
Catskill Animal Sanctuary is a 150-acre refuge in New York’s Hudson Valley. Home to 10 species of farmed animals that have been rescued from cruelty, neglect and abandonment.
Since a snowy day in January 2001, when a tiny pony named Dino, the sole survivor of a horrific barn fire, hobbled off the trailer and onto their grounds, more than 5,000 animals have come to call Catskill Animal Sanctuary home.
Over the years they continue to come — sometimes one needy soul, sometimes a flock of 100 or more at a time. The kind folk at CAS feel the utmost privilege to help each and every rescued animal, so they can understand what love feels like.
94% of their non-vegan visitors say they intend to reduce or eliminate animal products from their diet — proof that the work they're doing — combining love and urgency, connecting people with animals, and supporting people in their vegan journey — is working.
Come share the love - if you are in the New York area, why not plan a visit to the sanctuary?
Why are animal sanctuaries important?
Rescue and Rehabilitation: Animal sanctuaries provide a safe-haven for animals that have been rescued from abusive, neglectful, or dangerous situations. Many animals in sanctuaries have suffered from cruelty, exploitation, or injury, and these facilities offer them a chance to heal and recover.
Education and Awareness: Many sanctuaries serve as educational centers, allowing the public to learn about the animals, their natural behaviours, and the issues they face in the wild or captivity. This educational aspect can help raise awareness about animal welfare and conservation.
Promoting Compassion: Sanctuaries can inspire compassion and empathy toward animals. When people visit these facilities and see the animals' stories and the care they receive, it can foster a greater sense of responsibility and kindness toward animals.
Providing a Lasting Home: Many animals in sanctuaries cannot be released into the wild due to injuries, disabilities, or long-term captivity. Sanctuaries offer them a permanent home where they can live out their lives in a safe and comfortable environment.
In summary, animal sanctuaries play a crucial role in rescuing, rehabilitating, and caring for animals that have been mistreated or exploited. They also contribute to education, conservation, and advocacy efforts, promoting a more compassionate and ethical approach to animal welfare.
